Company History
Dunstone came to life in 1958 in Paul Kryder's basement.
Working in his Milwaukee, WI, home, Kryder, an engineer with a degree from the University of California at Berkeley, started a company that continues to thrive 40 years since its founding.
Beginnings
The Dupont Company began commercial production of polyester film in 1954. The film's valuable properties of high strength and superior insulation were quickly recognized.
Kryder's enthusiasm for developing a unique specialty tape with high performance characteristics led him to add heat shrinkability and higher tensile strength to the film.
He founded the Dunstone Company to sell his finished product: Hi-Shrink Tape, which uncovered new processes and uses for polyester film unimaginable a few years earlier.
Hi-Shrink Tape found its way into numerous niche markets in its early years. The small company's friendly and direct approach encouraged trial and error methods to discover product applications.
As Dunstone grew and Hi-Shrink Tape gained acceptance, additional applications became standard manufacturing practice in markets the company served.
Second Phase
In 1978, Kryder and his son, John, Dunstone's current President, opted for a climate that didn't depend on a snow shovel to get in the front door. They moved the company to Charlotte, NC, a city whose strong business culture, fine people and sunshine allowed Dunstone to continue its quest to be an excellent supplier to its many customers.
John Kryder bought the company in 1983 and has continued the traditions and practices that make small companies the backbone of American Manufacturing.
Dunstone moved into its current facility in 1990.
With over 6,000 square feet of modern manufacturing and administrative space, Dunstone can respond quickly to changes in volume or product mix. The company also designs and builds its own production equipment, giving the firm considerable flexibility.
Thanks to a stable business base, the company has been able to offer more products and applications to different industries throughout the U.S and internationally.
